LLC Name Search: How to Check and Choose Your LLC Name
Your LLC name has to pass the state’s rules before your company can be approved. Here is how an LLC name search works, the rules names must follow, ideas for picking a strong name, and how LLCPronto checks your name for you before filing.
An LLC name search checks whether your chosen name is free to use in the state where you form your LLC. The name must be different from every other business registered in that state and must end with “LLC”, “L.L.C.” or “Limited Liability Company”. With LLCPronto, you send us two or three name ideas and we check availability for free before we file, so your LLC is not rejected over its name.
How an LLC Name Search Works
Every US state keeps its own register of business names. When you form an LLC, the state compares your name with the names already on its register. If your name is the same as, or too close to, an existing one, the filing is rejected. Names are checked state by state, so a name taken in Delaware may still be free in Wyoming.
LLC Naming Rules
- Include an LLC ending: “LLC”, “L.L.C.” or “Limited Liability Company” (some states accept “Ltd. Liability Co.”)
- Be distinguishable: changing only “the”, punctuation or plural forms usually does not make a name different
- Avoid restricted words: words like Bank, Insurance, Trust or University usually need special approval
- Do not imply a government agency: words such as FBI, Treasury or Federal are not allowed
- Do not suggest a corporation: “Inc.” or “Corporation” cannot be used in an LLC name
Examples: Will This Name Be Accepted?
| Existing name | Your idea | Likely result |
|---|---|---|
| Blue River LLC | Blue River Co LLC | Rejected: too similar |
| Blue River LLC | The Blue River LLC | Rejected: “The” does not count |
| Blue River LLC | Blue River Digital LLC | Usually accepted |
| None | Global Trust LLC | Needs approval: restricted word |
| None | Nova Commerce LLC | Accepted if free in that state |
LLC Name Ideas: How to Pick a Strong Name
- Keep it short and easy to spell for clients in any country
- Make it brandable rather than only descriptive, so you can grow into new products
- Check the domain: a matching .com makes payments and verification smoother
- Check social handles on the platforms you sell on
- Avoid famous brands: a free state name can still break someone’s trademark
- Think about marketplaces: Amazon and Stripe compare your LLC name with your store and website
LLC Name vs Trademark vs Domain
| Item | What it protects | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| LLC name | Your legal company name | Only in the state of formation |
| Trademark | Your brand for specific goods or services | Nationwide (federal) or per country |
| Domain name | Your website address | Online, worldwide |
A free LLC name does not give you trademark rights. If you plan to build a big brand, check trademarks before you commit.
Can I Use a Different Name for My Business?
Yes. Your LLC can trade under another name by registering a DBA (“doing business as”). See DBA vs LLC for how that works.
Changing Your LLC Name Later
You can change the name by filing an amendment with the state. After that, you also need to update the IRS record for your EIN, your bank, Stripe and every marketplace, so it is worth choosing well at the start.

LLC Name Search: FAQs
How do I check if an LLC name is available?
Each state checks names against its own business register. With LLCPronto, send us your name ideas and we check availability for free before filing.
Does my LLC name have to include “LLC”?
Yes. It must end with “LLC”, “L.L.C.” or “Limited Liability Company”, or another ending your state allows.
Can two LLCs have the same name?
Not in the same state. The same name can exist in different states, because each state keeps its own register.
What words cannot be used in an LLC name?
Words that suggest a bank, insurer, government agency or corporation, such as Bank, Insurance, FBI or Inc., are restricted or not allowed.
Is an LLC name the same as a trademark?
No. An LLC name only reserves the name in one state. A trademark protects your brand for certain goods or services.
Can I change my LLC name later?
Yes, by filing an amendment with the state, then updating the IRS, your bank and your platforms.
Can I reserve an LLC name before forming?
Most states allow a short name reservation, but if you are ready to form, it is simpler to file the LLC straight away.
