Selling on Amazon, Shopify, Etsy and eBay With a US LLC
A US LLC lets international sellers register as a US business, get paid into a US bank account and use US payment tools. Here is what each platform checks, which tax form to use, and the mistakes that stall verification.
With a US LLC for Amazon sellers and other platforms, yes, a non-resident can sell on Amazon US, Shopify, Etsy and eBay with a US LLC. You need the LLC, its EIN, a US bank account in the LLC’s name and matching details everywhere. Most platforms then ask the owner for Form W-8BEN in their tax interview, because a single-member LLC is disregarded for US tax. Each platform verifies you separately.

What Every Platform Needs
- Your LLC’s exact legal name, state and EIN
- A US bank account in the LLC’s name for payouts
- A US business address (not a PO box)
- Your passport, and sometimes a recent bank or utility statement in your name
- Details that match exactly across all documents
Platform by Platform
| Platform | What a US LLC gives you | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon US | Register as a US business; payouts to a US bank | Identity verification, sometimes by video call; details must match exactly |
| Shopify | Shopify Payments as a US business | Separate verification for Shopify Payments; sales tax on your own store |
| Etsy | US seller account with US bank deposits | Etsy verifies the shop owner; keep shop and LLC details consistent |
| eBay | US business seller account with bank payouts | Payout account must be in the business’s name |
The Tax Interview: W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E?
Because a single-member LLC owned by a non-US person is a “disregarded entity” for US tax, platforms usually ask the owner to complete Form W-8BEN, not the LLC to complete W-8BEN-E. Multi-member LLCs are different. Answer the same way on every platform; mixed answers are a common reason for holds.
Sales Tax for Online Sellers
Amazon, Etsy and eBay act as “marketplace facilitators” in most states, so they collect and pay sales tax on your marketplace sales. On your own Shopify store, you may need to register and collect sales tax once you pass a state’s threshold. If you buy stock for resale, a resale certificate can save you paying tax twice.
Common Seller Mistakes
- Mismatched names or addresses between the platform, the EIN letter and the bank.
- Mixing W-8BEN and W-8BEN-E across platforms.
- Using a registered agent address as the store’s business address.
- Ignoring FBA tax questions. US inventory can change your tax position.
- Forgetting Form 5472 each year.

US LLC for Amazon Sellers: Step by Step
- Form the LLC in a low-cost state such as Wyoming or New Mexico
- Get the EIN, and keep the LLC name exactly as it appears on the EIN letter
- Open a US business bank account in the LLC’s name for payouts
- Register on Amazon Seller Central as a US business with the same name, EIN and address
- Complete the tax interview as the foreign owner of a disregarded LLC (usually Form W-8BEN)
- Pass identity verification with your passport and matching documents
Follow the same order for Shopify, Etsy and eBay. Most delays come from details that do not match between the platform, the EIN letter and the bank account.
E-commerce FAQs
Do I need a US LLC to sell on Amazon US?
If you live in the US, it is optional. If you live outside the US, a US LLC is the practical way in: you register as a US business, receive payouts into a US bank account in dollars and keep business and personal finances separate.
Which tax form do I give Amazon with a single-member LLC?
A single-member LLC is “disregarded” for US tax, so Amazon’s tax interview usually asks for the foreign owner’s details on Form W-8BEN rather than the LLC’s own form. Answer it consistently on every platform.
Can I use Shopify Payments with a US LLC?
Shopify Payments is available to US businesses with a US bank account. Shopify runs its own verification of the business and owner, and approval is its decision.
Do I have to collect sales tax?
On Amazon, Etsy and eBay, the marketplace usually collects and pays sales tax for you in most states. On your own Shopify store, sales tax can be your responsibility once you reach a state’s threshold.
Does Amazon FBA affect my US taxes?
It can. Keeping inventory in US warehouses may create US tax obligations that a service-only LLC does not have. Talk to our tax team, including M. Hassan, CPA, before you scale.
How long does it take to start selling on Amazon with a US LLC?
The LLC and EIN can be ready within days; bank approval and Amazon verification then take from a few days to a few weeks, depending on your documents.
